Designed around the course content for Unit3: Understanding Nature and Effect of Worldwide Travel which sits in the Edexcel Level 2 BTEC suite of qualifications in Travel &amp; Tourism. This vodcast is designed to partially cover P4 and P5. For this assessment criteria learners need to be able to work out different time zones and show an understanding of their affect on people travelling around the world. However, it is anticipated that it could be adapted for other awarding bodies and other levels depending upon the content that learners need to learn and demonstrate their understanding of. &#13;
&#13;

Task three allows for discussion surrounding not only time zones but also different cultures and understandings (all learners in terms of names and places of origin are actual students within my department) and therefore allows for Equality and Diversity mapping to take place on lesson plans. Additionally, the tasks are structured in a way that allows for clear and measurable differentiation (in terms of the detail applied to task one and task three) and the handout can also be adapted to ask for more/less if required and appropriate. Every Child Matters themes are also mapped as time zones and long distance travelling are linked to Being Healthy (so long as the tutor covered the risk of DVT) - as well as simply mapping across Enjoying and Achieving (learners liked this activity) and Making a Positive Contribution (learners, generally, all took part very well)&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
The concept of this video is that learner would watch this for homework whilst completing the task sheet which has been prepared to support this video and then, when they come to class the next session they are expected to share their findings on the New Years Eve party.   I have also uploaded the task sheet and the world map thumbnail that I have used with the group so that they are able to find and locate different cities and their time zones. &#13;
&#13;
&#13;
In practice, this worked quite well. The only downside was that some learners didn't understand that they had to complete the handout and bring their notes to class with them, therefore, there were some learners who needed to be supported either their peers or by the tutor.&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
Filmed as an infomercial, this is seen (in feedback from learners) as being exciting, engaging and interactive and the learners who completed the task well said the whole exercise (watching the video and completing the gapped handout) took approximately 25 minutes. The vodcast was loaded onto my college's VLE rather than an open source forum like YouTube so to reduce the distractions available - however, there were some learners without access to a computer at home so they either went to the college library or borrowed a DVD copy that I'd prepared in case this scenario occurred. &#13;

&#13;
The session I used this vodcast to support was observed as part of an Internal Quality Review (my college employed OfSTED inspectors to do a mock inspection) and it was graded outstanding with no area for development and best practice identified for use of ILT to support and engage learning as well as innovative teaching and use of resources.

This e-book is offered as a learning resource to accompany the textbook 'Statistics for Geography and Environmental Science' by Richard Harris and Claire Jarvis (Prentice Hall, 2011). Its specific focus is to consider some of the statistical methods and techniques presented in that book and show how they are undertaken in the statistical computing software called R. It will be of interest to teachers and to students who are using R for the first time and want a simple introduction to it.&#13;
This book does not pretend to be a comprehensive introduction to either statistics or to R. On the statistical side, it is designed to be read with the parent textbook, to which cross-references are made, offering directed reading and guided learning. A recommended text for R is the Introduction to R which comes with the software and also is available at http://cran.r-project.org/manuals.html. For a more detailed exposition see 'R in a Nutshell' by Joseph Adler (O'Reilly, 2010). For a  detailed treatment of statistics in R see 'Data Analysis and Graphics using R' by John Maindonald and John Braun (2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2007) or 'Statistics: an Introduction using R' by Michael Crawley (Wiley, 2005).
