Safari is a guided expedition through the information world, aimed at helping you to feel more confident about finding, evaluating and using information. You will begin by considering the different types of information used in everyday life, and for studies, learning where the information comes from and goes to. You will become acquainted as to how information is categorised and communicated, and where to look for it.
The material will encourage you to think about information in ways that will allow you to develop strategies for searching and teach you how to access catalogue and database resources. It looks at the practice of searching, both on and offline, and will teach you techniques for using electronic search tools.
Evaluating and organising the information you have acquired is important, and you will learn why and how you can do this. The material will introduce you to referencing, bibliographies and social bookmarks.
Finally, you will be provided with guidance on how you can implement what you have learnt to gather and share information that is relevant to your studies.
Safari is divided into seven sections, each covering a particular aspect of information skills. Within each section there is a series of topics to work through. You can either work through Safari from the beginning to the end, or focus on a particular area. Although the material in the first two sections of Safari is largely just for you to read and reflect upon, the later sections of Safari will require you to undertake some activities. For some of these you will need pen and paper. For others you will be directed to web pages and resources outside Safari. In Section 7, activities in early topics will feed in to a final activity in Section 7.5. We have designed some activities so that they open up within a new browser window. When you have finished these activities, close that browser window to return to the rest of Safari.
Passwords: some of the links we provide are to library resources, which may require passwords. It is possible that your own university, college or organisation may be able to provide you with a password, so you will need to contact them direct for assistance.
