Bowlby proposed the maternal deprivation hypothesis. He based this hypothesis on the results of a study of 44 juvenile thieves in a child guidance centre (1944).
Bowlby found that a significant number of these young people had experienced long term maternal deprivation i.e. long term separation from their mothers after the attachment bond had been formed. He found that these young people had specific emotional problems that he referred to as affectionless psychopathy.
