Tajfel’s Social Identity Theory

Tajfel's theory is based on the idea that prejudice arises out of the need to belong to a group.

Put another way, the negative potential of prejudice arises out of a positive social motivation. We have a strong desire to belong and we seek others out who give us a sense of belonging through shared attitudes and values. This theory has become known as Social identity Theory (Tajfel, 1978).
