The main finding of the SAMD project is that using the Grid allows the transfer of large datasets and complex analyses on High Performance Computers in a fraction of the time it takes to do this manually. That this can be done with a relatively user-friendly Web interface is an added advantage. The project methodology used in SAMD can be generalised beyond this specific research query to a wider range of social science research problems. Also, the scaling up of research is now possible, where researchers can:
Perhaps the most important generalisations from SAMD are that single sign-on to data and compute resources can greatly streamline working practices, that a culture of standards is necessary to realise this meaningfully across multiple administrative domains, and that this encourages third parties to develop applications that exploit or add value to Grid-enabled data.
