Research Methods used in Sociology

Sociologists carry out research using a range of methods. The method or combination of methods that a researcher will select depends on the topic that they are studying.

Generally, the methods used will produce either PRIMARY or SECONDARY data.

PRIMARY data is that which is produced through first hand research and includes data from Questionnaires, Interviews and Participant Observation.

SECONDARY data is that which already exists (so has been collected by others) and is then used by the researcher. This includes Official Statistics, Diaries and Newspaper articles.
