Assessment before treatment

begins. These are Visual, Postural and Oral Questions.
moment your client arrives in reception it is possible to be visually assessing
body language and appearance.
they walk in – do they have any mobility problems?
their body language open with good eye contact? Good eye contact and open
body language may show someone who is confidant and approachable. Closed
body language e.g. folded arms across chest, and not meeting the
therapist’s eye may indicate problems of self esteem and poor
they clean and tidy? Someone who presents themselves well usually
indicates that they are taking care of themselves. Poor hygiene and
untidiness may show that the client is having difficulties in some areas
of their lives, where they feel unable to make, or take time to look after

conversation with our client from the first contact. We often start to relax
our client with chat about the weather, their journey etc. Questions about
appointment times and any queries the client has will usually be discussed prior
to our completion of our consultation record card. First impressions count.
to your questions, rather than one word answers
If you find
some initial difficulties with your client be sure to repeat yourself until the
client understands. You may have to reframe the way you put the information
across or simplify your language. Sometimes therapists can forget that the
technical terms we use are not familiar to members of the public.

indicate problems with muscle imbalance leading to Scoliosis of the spine

client does e.g. working at a computer which may lead to Kyposis
they overweight? Excess weight may indicate poor level of fitness.
they very thin? According to age thinner people may indicate a poor level
A full postural
analysis should be done after the consultation record card completion if no
contraindications are present.
