Spreadsheets are used extensively in all of the public services for all sorts of tasks. They are very similar to databases but are much more powerful when it comes to calculations. They therefore are often used in areas relating to finance and for storing and sorting statistical information.
Click on the link below to see an example using crime figures for 2001/2002. Use the tabs along the bottom of the pages to compare crime figures around the country.
Did you notice that the top line of data on each sheet gives the total of each crime type for the whole of England & Wales and the second line is a Total for the area of the country that you are looking at. This would obviously help you if you were trying to use the data to compare crime levels in different areas. It doesn't help you however when it comes to looking at crime trends i.e. whether certain crimes are increasing or decreasing and whether more criminals are being arrested. Move to the next page to see some data on trends regarding householders views on crime issues that affect them.
