The Grid is the technical infrastructure that enables e-Science.
The Grid provides a way of utilising computing power that may be located anywhere across the network. The term derives from the electricity grid, where you can access power from a socket and not care where or by whom it is generated. Similarly, the computational Grid - at least in theory - allows access to computing power from what could be a very wide range of computers; the user has no need to know which institutions or individuals 'own' the original resource upon which their computations are run or data stored. The use of specialist software, known as middleware, makes possible seamless and transparent access to researchers to many of the computer resources they need to solve their research problems.
